9/11 Health Impacts—Twenty-Five Years Later, the Dust Is Still Speaking

Truth delayed is still truth—but delayed truth can cost lives.

Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, our nation continues to mourn those who were killed that morning. We must also remember the responders, recovery workers, office workers, residents, students and children whose health was damaged by what they breathed, swallowed and carried home afterward.

The attacks ended in a day. The health emergency did not.

Soon after 9/11, I began collecting research about what became known as World Trade Center cough and World Trade Center illness. I first published the information on a GeoCities website. When GeoCities discontinued its service, I preserved part of that work in my 2009 blog entry, “World Trade Center Illness Research.”

At that time, many connections between World Trade Center exposure and later illnesses were still being investigated. Researchers repeatedly said that the numbers were small, the latency periods were uncertain and more monitoring was needed.

The passage of time has now supplied evidence that could not have been available during those early years.

What We Know Now

When the World Trade Center buildings collapsed, an enormous cloud of pulverized building materials, glass fibers, asbestos, metals, concrete, plastics, combustion products and other contaminants spread through Lower Manhattan. Responders and recovery workers experienced some of the most intense exposure, but they were not the only people placed at risk.

Residents, workers, students, building occupants and people caught in the original dust cloud were also exposed. Dust was carried into apartments, offices, schools, vehicles and clothing. Some young people who were exposed are only now reaching ages when certain long-latency illnesses may appear.

The federal World Trade Center Health Program now recognizes and provides monitoring or treatment for numerous categories of certified 9/11-related conditions, including:

  • Asthma and other upper and lower airway disorders

  • Chronic cough and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease

  • Certain cancers

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and anxiety disorders

  • Acute traumatic injuries and medically associated conditions

This does not mean that every illness experienced by every exposed person was caused by 9/11. Medical certification requires evidence that a person’s condition and exposure meet the Program’s criteria. It does mean that the overall health consequences are now established beyond reasonable dispute.

According to New York City’s newly released World Trade Center 25-Year Health Impact Report, 10,562 FDNY members are certified with at least one physical health condition related to their World Trade Center service. Another 4,496 are certified with at least one mental-health condition, and 4,257 members currently have a cancer certification.

Behind every number is a human being—and a family.

The report also contains a reason for hope: 86 percent of World Trade Center responders in the FDNY program who were diagnosed with cancer were alive five years after diagnosis, compared with 63 percent of New York State residents diagnosed with the same cancers who were not exposed at the World Trade Center. Differences in monitoring and early detection may contribute to that survival advantage.

Felicia Dunn-Jones Must Still Be Remembered


In my early research, I wrote about Felicia Dunn-Jones, a 42-year-old attorney caught in the dust cloud while fleeing the collapsing towers. She died from sarcoidosis on February 10, 2002.

The New York City medical examiner later determined that her exposure to World Trade Center dust contributed to her death and added her name to the official list of victims.

Her story mattered then, and it matters now. She helped make visible a truth that would become clearer over the following decades: some people survived the attack only to face illnesses resulting from their exposure.

Mental Health Is Part of the Health Story

The continuing impact of 9/11 is not limited to lungs, digestive systems or cancer diagnoses. Survivors and responders may also live with PTSD, depression, anxiety, grief, substance-use disorders and the emotional strain of repeated illness and loss.

Physical and mental health must not be separated into competing priorities. Whole-person care recognizes that the body, mind, family and community can all carry the consequences of catastrophe.

A Call to Everyone Who Was There

You did not have to be a firefighter to have been exposed.

If you responded, worked, lived or attended school in the affected area—or participated in rescue, recovery or cleanup operations at the World Trade Center, Pentagon or Shanksville sites—do not assume that too much time has passed to ask questions.

The World Trade Center Health Program provides eligible responders and survivors with no-cost medical monitoring and treatment for certified 9/11-related conditions. Its services are available through clinical centers in the New York metropolitan area and a nationwide provider network for eligible people who now live elsewhere.

Even if you feel healthy, documented exposure history and appropriate medical monitoring may matter. If you have persistent respiratory, digestive, mental-health or other symptoms, talk with a qualified healthcare professional and investigate whether you are eligible for the Program.

This section fits beautifully immediately before “Never Forget Must Be an Action.” It completes the circle: remember those who passed, care for those who became ill, and express gratitude to those still among us.

Let Us Honor Those Who Are Still Here

Albert did not write his history from a distance. He lived it. He found a way through the guarded perimeters, became a volunteer and reached Ground Zero. He worked amid the dust, smoke, rubble, grief and extraordinary human determination of those early days.

Albert survived. He is still here—and I am deeply grateful.

His presence reminds us that honoring 9/11 must not be reserved only for those who have passed. We must also honor the responders, recovery workers, volunteers, survivors, residents and witnesses who are alive today.

Let us thank them while they can hear our gratitude.

Let us listen while they can tell their own stories.

Let us ask how they are doing—not only during anniversary ceremonies, but throughout the year. Let us make certain they receive the healthcare, recognition and human support they deserve.

Albert’s book, Getting to Ground Zero: A Volunteer’s Story, preserves the experience of an ordinary citizen who answered an extraordinary call. His testimony helps us remember that, after the destruction, people stepped forward to help America rise again.

Some of those courageous souls are still here, including Albert Davis. We should all be answering the questions about how can we prepare for the future in the event of this or something worse happening again.

May we give them their flowers, our gratitude and our loving attention now.

“Never Forget” Must Be an Action

Twenty-five years later, remembrance must mean more than ceremonies, flags and moments of silence.

To never forget means:

  • Never abandon those who became ill while serving others.

  • Never dismiss residents, workers or children whose symptoms appeared years later.

  • Never allow political convenience to replace honest environmental-health information.

  • Never stop researching illnesses that may take decades to emerge.

  • Never place institutional protection above public protection.

  • Never tell people an environment is safe until the evidence supports that conclusion.

This is not only a lesson about the past. It is a principle for every future disaster, demolition, industrial accident and technological development:

Tell the truth about risks as early as possible. Preserve the evidence. Protect the people. Continue monitoring for as long as the science requires.

In 2009, I wrote that World Trade Center cough and World Trade Center illness were real health issues. Today, extensive medical research, federal healthcare programs and 25 years of patient histories confirm the magnitude of that warning.

We honor those who died on September 11.

We honor those who survived.

We honor those who ran toward danger—and those who are still living with what followed them home.

Tell it about the work you did without getting paid.

Tell it what you've learned from raising a family, running a household, surviving hard times, building a business, volunteering, pursuing a mission or spending decades in a profession.

Then ask:

What is valuable here?

Who has a problem that my experience could help solve?

Are people already paying for that solution?

What could I offer without going back to school, spending thousands of dollars or reinventing myself?

What could I test this week?

And perhaps the most exciting question:

What do I know that I don't realize people pay for?

Don't simply accept the AI's answer. Investigate it.

Ask for evidence.

Search the marketplace.

Look at what people are already buying.

Check prices.

Study competitors.

Talk to potential customers.

Then test the idea before spending a fortune building it.

Your Experience Is an Asset

The Information Age has given ordinary people extraordinary research tools.

AI can help us examine our own lives almost as if we were looking at somebody else's résumé.

That distance can be revealing.

You may discover that something you've dismissed as “just something I know how to do” solves a problem that costs someone else time, frustration, mistakes or money.

And solving problems has value.

Your first experiment doesn't have to become a corporation.

Maybe it earns the first $100.

Then $500.

Then $1,000.

Maybe that's enough.

Or perhaps that little experiment reveals an entirely new income stream.

The important thing is to discover what is possible.

Include the Steward

There is another lesson here that has become especially important to me.

Those of us committed to families, communities, causes and missions can become very good at directing our resources outward.

But sustainable service must include the person doing the serving.

The steward is part of the infrastructure.

Money for decent shoes isn't a departure from the mission.

Money for nourishment isn't taking from the mission.

Money that allows the person doing the work to be comfortable, secure, rested and prepared is not evidence that service has become selfish.

A model that continuously consumes its steward without replenishment is not yet a sustainable model.

So take a little time with Arlan Hamilton's video and prompt.

Don't just ask AI what new thing you should become.

Tell it who you already are.

Tell it what you've lived.

Tell it what you've learned.

Tell it what you can do.

Then ask it to research the marketplace and help you discover where those abilities intersect with a problem somebody is already willing to pay to solve.

You might be surprised by what has been hiding in plain sight.

Information Is Transformation.

And sometimes the information that transforms your future is information about the value already inside you.

Twelve Years Since I Died — And I’m Still Here Despite Cumulative Load of EMF & RF & radiation

July, 2026 marked twelve years since a grand mal seizure took me out completely, legally dead. I saw "the light" and went to the Gates of Heaven. There was a prude at the gates so I was sent to hell. I got to the gates of hell and looked up. Over the gate came a wave, like water. As it reached over it, the wave stopped. From its tip a scroll dropped down. It was a restraining order. I am blessed to know that I've kicked satan's ass so many times he has a restraining order against me. 

And then life pulled me back in. I don’t take that lightly. I don’t take any breath lightly. I’m 73 now, healthy, teaching, creating, building and still paying attention to the patterns that saved my life.

I’ve had four major seizures since 2014. The first one that killed me plus three more that knocked me out so hard I woke up in hospitals days later with no memory of what happened. No tumor. No stroke. No infection. No physical cause. Just the clinical label: “abnormal electrical activity in the brain.”

But I’ve lived long enough and paid close enough attention, to know that “no physical cause” doesn’t mean “no cause at all.”

Every seizure I’ve ever had happened in environments loaded, stacked with wireless and electrical radiation. Smart meters on the outside wall for the building I was in. Wi‑Fi routers close by. Cell phones. Microwave radiation. Transmission towers outside. Computer screens in front of me. Dense EMF/RF everywhere.

After the 4th seizure I bought a RF meter. And that meter changed everything, from speculation to understanding.

It showed me where the hotspots were. It showed me where my computer setup was frying me. It showed me where I needed to move, how far I needed to sit, what needed to be unplugged and what needed to be relocated. It gave me back control in a world that had taken it by corporate policies.

Since reorganizing my environment, I have had no more seizures. I take only generic Keppra. I’m strong. I’m healthy. I’m still teaching. I’m still writing. I’m still building movement‑ready materials. I’m still alive.

And now, in 2026, the United States is moving toward 6G — sub‑THz frequencies, higher density, more devices, more saturation. I still cannot find experts studying people like me. People who have survived seizures in high‑EMF environments. People whose neurological events line up with wireless density. People who have lived the patterns that research hasn’t caught up to.

I’m not here to tell you what causes what. I’m here to tell you what happened to me.


I’m here to ask why no one is studying cumulative exposure, not just instantaneous limits, not just SAR, not just short‑term heating, but lifetime load. Why is there no cumulative‑dose metric for non‑ionizing radiation when millions of us live inside it 24/7? Why are people with neurological histories invisible in the rollout of new wireless generations?

RF/EMF is increasingly studied as one more stressor in that mix, especially for long‑term, real‑world exposure.

2. No, we don’t yet have a single “cumulative number” for all of it. There is still no agreed‑upon dose unit that adds up phones + Wi‑Fi + towers + 6G + nuclear plants + stress + toxins into one health metric. Different fields use different units, and RF is mostly treated in isolation, not as part of a full‑body, full‑life load.



3. “Cumulative Load Equation” is ahead of the curve, not outside it.

(EMF + Toxins + Stress + Sleep Loss + Sedentary) = MINUS (Nutrition + Movement + Sleep + Connection + Calm)

You’re allowed to measure your environment. You’re allowed to protect your body. You’re allowed to ask questions even when the experts aren’t answering them.

An ancient insight speaks directly to this moment: within every crisis lives the possibility of equal or greater benefit. Now is the time to focus on that greater possibility. What is often described as a data center crisis can become something far more constructive: an environmental, human and technological turning point that enriches all involved as an empowerment center.

Our lives depend on an immense physical foundation built using 20th Century techniques. Artificial intelligence, cloud computing, robotics, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, scientific research, education, communications, finance and modern commerce all rely on data centers. These facilities have become part of civilization’s factories, libraries, powerhouses and memory banks.

The question before us is no longer do we need data centers. They already help shape the present and their influence is expanding every day. The real question is how we shape them with the craftsmanship, courage and care this era requires.

Data centers are the factories, libraries, powerhouses and memory banks of today. Every search, video stream, A.I. interaction, medical record, financial transaction, scientific calculation, classroom platform and digital conversation depends on them. They are becoming as essential to modern life as roads, railroads, power plants, waterways, libraries, theatres and telecommunications networks were to earlier generations.

Yet while digital technologies have evolved at extraordinary speed, much of the structures supporting them still depends on older assumptions about energy, water, construction, waste, land use and community benefit. As artificial intelligence expands and demand for computing power accelerates, the gap between digital intelligence and physical infrastructure becomes one of the defining challenges and one of the greatest opportunities of our time.

We are not beginning without guidance. Our ancestors left us recorded knowledge, tested examples and what I think of as cyber angels in the archives.

This is not a reason to fear the future.
It is a reason to make it much, much better.

At the same time, unprecedented investments in data centers are accelerating the construction of new facilities around the world.          Today’s data centers raise legitimate concerns for communities and ecosystems. These concerns include stressed water supplies, high energy demand, rising utility costs, persistent noise, light pollution, land use pressure, electromagnetic concerns, construction impacts and questions about who truly benefits from technological growth. Communities around the world are asking serious and reasonable questions. They require enormous amounts of electricity. Many consume significant quantities of water for cooling. Their construction can involve large volumes of concrete, steel, equipment and site development. Residents often worry about land use, noise, light, vibration, visibility, environmental impact, public utilities strain and whether these facilities will create lasting local benefit or destruction of local resources.

The Solution: The Data Center Stewardship Approach

 


Data Center Stewardship proposes a practical and hopeful model: technology, humanity and the natural world designed as partners rather than competitors. Instead of treating energy, water, construction, agriculture, transportation, communications and community development as separate issues, Data Center Stewardship brings them into one design conversation. The result is not a single invention. It is a way of thinking that connects tools we already have with innovations now emerging.

Imagine this:

What if the very facilities powering artificial intelligence became models for environmental stewardship, community empowerment and regenerative design? What if data centers evolved from resource consumers into restoration partners? What if they helped conserve, recycle and restore clean water instead of simply drawing from strained supplies? What if waste heat could support agriculture? What if construction materials, energy, water strategies, artificial intelligence and community partnerships could work together as one intelligent, life-supporting system?

These are not fantasy questions. They are design questions. They ask us to align existing knowledge, proven tools, emerging technologies and public purpose. The goal is not simply to build bigger or faster facilities. The goal is to create wiser facilities that make the digital experience better for everyone by giving more than they take. The concepts explored throughout this work point toward that larger mission.

Environmentally Conscious Construction

Data centers can incorporate renewable materials such as hemp-based composites, hempcrete, hemp plastics and hemp graphene; advanced insulation; automated construction printing (laser construction print heads suspended from drones); vertical circular design principles; and methods that reduce waste while increasing strength, efficiency, self-sufficiency and long-term value.

Intelligent Water Systems

Water is one of the most important challenges facing data center development. Atmospheric water generation, water recycling, advanced purification, passive cooling and other water recovery strategies can reduce dependence on traditional water supplies while supporting healthier waterways and more resilient communities. 

Cleaner and More Distributed Energy

Energy demand is one of our defining issues. Solar, wind, geothermal, hydroelectric, magnetic, graphene-based and other advanced energy syncopation, combined with storage, microgrids, efficiency improvements and smarter energy can help us solve our energy problems now. Advanced electromagnetic management, including Faraday shielding integrated into structures, may also help reduce unnecessary exposure concerns and improve operational confidence.

The Data Center Stewardship Mission

We are living on the blessings of those who built before us. Our ancestors created railroads, highways, electrical grids, water management, airports, hospitals, schools, farms, neighborhoods, telecommunications networks and much more. Now it is our turn to create a better world that supports daily life, economic opportunity and environmental strength.

The question is not whether failure is an option. The question is what we can do today to make the world better now, so those yet to be born can inherit not only a powerful evolution of the internet, but also cleaner air, safer water, stronger communities and a more gracious way of living.

This is not a vision against technology. It is a vision for cyber tools that work in harmony with life and the Earth. When successful, the lessons learned from Data Center Stewardship can help improve homes, farms, schools, hospitals, businesses, neighborhoods, cities, communities, economies and our relationships with the natural world and one another.
